Soya Granules Upma


  • Soya (nutrella) granules: 1 cup
  • Wheat bran or rava: 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies finely chopped
  • Chopped onion: 1
  • Ginger grated: 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves: 1 stalk
  • Coriander finely chopped: 1 tsp
  • Mustard & cumin seeds: 1/2 tsp
  • Each chana and udad dal: 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder: 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida: 3–4 pinches
  • Oil: 1 tsp
  • Lemon juice: 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste


  1. Roast rava in a heavy pan, stirring continuously, till aroma exudes.
  2. Empty and keep aside.
  3. Roast granules in the same pan, stirring continuously, till warm.
  4. Empty and keep aside. Heat oil in the same pan, add dals, and stir for few seconds.
  5. Add seeds, allow spluttering.
  6. Add ginger, chillies, curry leaves, chopped onion.
  7. Stir till onion is tender.
  8. Add rava and soya granules.
  9. Stir for a minute. Add all other ingredients, except lemon juice, tomato, and coriander.
  10. Add 2 cups boiling water, stir to avoid lumps. Use a long-handled spoon, to avoid the splashing that may be caused.
  11. Add more water if necessary, to cook the rava and granules.
  12. Add lemon juice and coriander. Mix well. Cover and cook on low flame for 2-3 minutes.
